Queen's Harbour Master Portsmouth

LNTM No 63/14

  1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN by the Queen's Harbour Master Portsmouth that extensive preparation and then painting works will be conducted from 11 August 2014 on the Oil Fuel Jetty at Gosport in Portsmouth Harbour. The works are expected to take around two to three months to complete and will take place on the southern arm of the jetty. The works are intended to re-preserve the above water sections of the steel pilings. Work will not be conducted on the northern concrete piles.
  2. The works will be conducted from a small barge “MCS3”, with a RIB “SV1” in support. Preparation work will involve grit blasting of the pilings, using an inert and environmentally friendly Garnet grit. Protective sheeting and netting will be rigged around the pilings and the vast majority of the grit and arisings will be collected. Some small amounts may find their way into the water column, but all are assessed as non-toxic and of no risk to the environment. Painting works will involve spraying an epoxy-based paint, again within protective sheeting to collect any overspray. The paint is non-toxic and there is a very low assessed risk to the environment from any discharge.
  3. Operations are planned to take place Monday to Friday from 0730-1800.
  4. Mariners are requested to keep a good lookout and pass the Oil Fuel Jetty at slow speed while the barge is conducting operations. Wherever possible, Mariners are to stand-off at least 25 metres from the barge, and are to call on VHF if they need to come closer than this. The barge Supervisor will maintain a listening watch on VHF Channel 11, and will use the call sign “MCS3”.
  5. QHM Harbour Control will be kept informed of the work in progress and the precise location of the barge and may be contacted on VHF Ch 11 or by telephoning 023 92 723689 for the latest information.
  6. This LNTM will remain extant until works are complete.
